Raymond V. Gilmartin joined Merck & Co., Inc. in 1994 as president and chief executive officer. He is also chairman of the board.
Prior to his work at Merck, Gilmartin was president, CEO and chairman at Becton Dickinson Company. He joined the company in 1976 as vice president of strategic planning.
Gilmartin serves on the board of directors at General Mills and Microsoft and is the president of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Associations. He also serves as chairman of the Council on Competitiveness, is a director of The College Fund/UNCF and is a member of the Business Roundtable and the Business Council.
Gilmartin is active in health-industry affairs. He serves on the executive committee for the Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America and is a past chairman of the Healthcare Institute of New Jersey. He is a trustee of both Valley Health System, Inc. and of the Healthcare Leadership Council, a group dedicated to excellence in America's health care system.
Gilmartin received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Union College in 1963. He received his master's of business administration from Harvard Business School in 1968.
