Dr. Penny S. Amy earned bachelors and masters degrees from Portland State University in Biology and a doctorate from Oregon State University in microbiology. Following two post-doctoral appointments, one at Stanford University and one at Oregon State University, she joined the faculty of UNLV’s Department of Biological Sciences in 1985. Dr. Amy has contributed 16 years to teaching microbiology to UNLV students. As an administrator, Dr. Amy has been the Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences and the Dean of the Graduate College. She is now Director of Biotechnology Programs and the new UNLV branch campus at Shadow Lane and Charleston Blvd in Las Vegas’ medical district. Her duties now include responsibility for the Shadow Lane Campus function and development, and biomedical sciences and biotechnology business and research partnerships. Dr. Amy maintains an active environmental microbiology research laboratory where she mentors undergraduate and graduate students. Dr. Amy has published broadly in the areas of subsurface microbiology, microbial ecology, and wastewater microbiology.
